Events

Community events are an integral part of The Ikaros Project’s mission to support both preparation and integration, offering many points of grounding before and after retreat experiences. These gatherings feature expert talks that explore psychedelics in connection with mysticism, creativity, neuroscience, clinical psychology, existentialism, art, music, and physics, inviting our curious community to keep learning, connecting, and expanding beyond the retreat itself.

From Here to There: Finding Psychedelic Community Where None Existed

From Here to There is an intimate conversation exploring the intersections of psychedelics, psychology, identity, healing, and community stewardship through the lived experiences of doctoral researcher, educator, and community organizer Lianna Tullis-Robinson.

Drawing from both personal transformation and academic work, Lianna reflects on her journey navigating psychedelic spaces across mental health, spirituality, institutional systems, and grassroots community-building. From taking medical leave and rediscovering purpose, to creating psychedelic dialogue initiatives, securing research and travel grants, and becoming one of the first doctoral researchers at Western Michigan University to formally introduce psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy into dissertation research within her department, this discussion invites attendees into an honest exploration of resilience, belonging, and creating opportunities where few previously existed.

Grounded in a lens that honors intersectionality and culturally responsive care, the conversation will explore what it means to thoughtfully engage psychedelia in communities where these conversations are often misunderstood, stigmatized, inaccessible, or historically excluded. Attendees will be invited to reflect on psychedelic stewardship, identity, accessibility, transformation, and the evolving relationship between psychedelics, psychology, and collective healing.

Rather than offering a roadmap with fixed answers, this discussion creates space for curiosity, reflection, authenticity, and connection within the ever-evolving psychedelic landscape.

BIO:

Lianna Tullis-Robinson is a doctoral candidate in the counseling psychology program at Western Michigan University, community educator, and founder of the platform Excited About Entheogens. Her work centers on expanding inclusive conversations around psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, healing, spirituality, and community care through a culturally responsive lens.

As a researcher, Lianna’s dissertation explores BIPOC perceptions of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, making her among the first scholars at Western Michigan University to formally introduce psychedelic therapy research into dissertation work within her department. Beyond academia, she has cultivated community-based psychedelic dialogue through public education, meetup organizing, podcasting, advocacy, and #OurHealingMatters, her community health education initiative centered on inclusive healing dialogue, accessibility, and culturally responsive psychedelic education.

Grounded in the intersection of lived experience, scholarship, and community stewardship, Lianna’s work seeks to create spaces where conversations around healing, identity, and psychedelia can be approached with greater empathy, accessibility, and cultural awareness. Her contributions to psychedelic education and multicultural community engagement have been recognized through receiving first place in the PsychedelX Student Speaker Series (2024), being named Best Community Educator by the Michigan Psychedelic Society and Detroit Psychedelic Society (2025), and receiving the Outstanding Contributions to Multicultural Counseling and Psychology award from Western Michigan University (2026).

Through her research, public speaking, and community initiatives, Lianna continues working toward a more inclusive and relational psychedelic landscape—one that honors both scientific inquiry and the human stories that shape healing, transformation, and belonging.

Altered States and the Return of Rejected Knowledge

Altered States and the Return of Rejected Knowledge

In this talk, Wouter Hanegraaff will give an accessible overview of his work on Western esotericism, the study of traditions that explore hidden or inner ways of understanding the world. A key part of this is Hermeticism, an ancient school of thought derived from the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus, which offers that reality has both visible and invisible layers, and that deeper insight comes from refining our awareness. Hanegraaff shows how these ideas can help us make sense of psychedelic experiences, which often bring symbolic impressions, new perspectives, or a sense of uncovering something previously overlooked. By connecting psychedelics with Hermetic ideas, he offers a grounded way to understand altered states as part of a tradition of expanding how humans perceive and make meaning of their experiences.

Wouter Hanegraaff is a scholar whose lifelong curiosity has always led him toward what lies at the edges of mainstream culture, such as the neglected, the overlooked, and the forgotten. From his early fascination with mushrooms in the Dutch Mycological Society, to his studies in music, philosophy, and cultural history, he has followed the red thread of exploring hidden traditions and ways of knowing. Through his writings and teachings, Wouter invites us to step into unfamiliar worlds that expand our perspectives and enrich our imagination.

Professor Hanegraaf’s recent work, especially in Hermetic Spirituality and the Historical Imagination, shows that these inner journeys are part of a much older story. They connect to ancient traditions of initiation, visionary insight, and sacred knowledge. The Hermetic view, where spirit and matter reflect each other, and the divine is both beyond and within, offers a powerful way to make sense of psychedelic experiences. These aren’t just chemical events; they are moments of remembering, reenactments of a deeper human longing for wholeness.
